[-■- DESCRIPTION OF MUTANTS -■-]
It is the year 2050 and the world has changed drastically since the
late 1990's. People and animals have developed strange supernatural
abilities and fight in a world of chaos in order to survive. Players
have the choice to fight for justice and defend the city from evil
Mutants or to join the ranks of evil and wreak havoc and terror on
everyone. A player must fight their way through the game to reach
level 15...the home base of the Mutant Warriors. Once there, the
player will do battle against the Grand Mutant Warrior for control of
the city. Depending on the player's good or evil alignment and the
type of mutant power they choose will determine HOW the game plays for
them. Each mutant power has advantages and disadvantages.
When a player reaches a specified experience, charisma or intellect,
the Supreme Mutant on that level will come and find them. It is the
Supreme Mutant's goal to stop them from passing. Missions will be
announced at the completion of each level that instructs the player
what they need to obtain in order to advance. In most cases, this is
experience, charisma or a specific object. Your callers will find this
game to be fun and surprising. There are many secrets and hidden
places in the game. A player who pays attention to the words
of wisdom given by characters in the game will be able to figure out
how to get into these secret places. We ran this game in a beta test
over 4 months and half of the hidden features in this game were still
not found! Plus, there is a lot of fun and humor along the way!
[-■- FUTURE RELEASES -■-]
All future releases of this game will be ABSOLUTELY FREE to those
that have registered the game. I am hopeful that this game will be
popular on a number of BBS's across the nation and I plan on writing
regular revisions. In fact, I have already started work on the next
release with some new and enhanced options!
[-■- FEATURES -■-]
■ Written in wcCODE by Mustang Software Inc.
■ Operates on single or multi-node systems with multiple callers
playing simultaneously.
■ Supports fossils, non-standard COM port settings, etc. Basically,
if Wildcat! can operate on your computer then you can operate this
game.
■ Monitors carrier detection and exits if carrier is lost.
■ Pages from other callers on the BBS are not transmitted in the
game so as not to interrupt it. Pages are sent when player exits.
■ Easy configuration and setup in minutes! No .PRM files to play
with as all responses are contained within the game. Use the
configuration program (MUTEDIT.WCX) to set everything up in no
time at all!
■ Maintenance is automatically run upon the first player to enter
the game each day. No external programs to run.
[-■- TECHNICAL SUPPORT -■-]
Should you run into some problems or if errors arise from using this
program PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I can't fix it if I don't know it's
broken. Your suggestions and comments are always welcome and will
help to further develop this game.
■ SUPPORT BBS
The Coral Reef BBS is my personal BBS. There are currently 3 nodes
into the system. Calling the first node will automatically place
you to any node that is available but I have listed the other numbers
for reference. Dialing node 3 will connect you to our 28.8 node.
Node 1: (517) 894-0729 Up to 14,400
Node 2: (517) 894-5052 Up to 14,400
Node 3: (517) 894-0413 Up to 28,800
■ INTERNET
Using the Internet you can leave a note to BRADBURY@CRIS.COM for me to
receive your comments. I normally check my E-Mail a few times a week.
■ SUPPORT SITES
* Please see the enclosed file SITES.DOC for a complete listing *
The Chocolate Malt BBS in Bay City, Michigan, is our sister board and
official support site for distributing our products. I frequent this
system almost daily so if you can't get through to my personal system
you may try leaving a note here. The latest versions of our software
products can be found on this BBS as well. Again, calling the first
node will roll your call to a node that is available but all numbers
are listed.
Node 1 - (517) 686-6974 Up to 14,400
Node 2 - (517) Up to 14,400
Node 3 - (517) 686-6991 Up to 28,800
** Special Note: You will find a conference on The Chocolate Malt
called "E-Mail Express". This is an EchoMail message base that we
share using wcNET so leaving a message to me in this conference
will be transferred to my BBS on a daily basis.
■ MSI HQ BBS
Mustang Software, Inc. support BBS is another of my favorite hang-outs
and I visit quite frequently each week. MSI BBS: 1-805-873-2400
■ MSI SupportNET
If you or a local BBS in your area carries the MSI SupportNET EchoMail
conferences you can leave me a PRIVATE message on this network. I
carry this network on my BBS and transmit mail daily. Please take
note that this group of conferences is dedicated to Wildcat! products.
Please mark messages to me as private so we don't deviate from the
topic.
■ FIDONET
Our fidonet address is 1:239/600 and has just been setup on our BBS as
of May 27th, 1996, so we are still new at it. You can FREQ the file
SAPPHIRE to get a detailed listing of all the files you can request
from our system. You will also find that I frequent the DOORGAMES
echo to support customers and offer information about Mutants.
■ POSTAL SYSTEM
Yes, I even have an address too! You can send letters or registration
fees to the following address:

[-■- REGISTRATION -■-]
This program is released under the SHAREWARE concept. This concept
gives you the opportunity to try the program before you purchase it
and see if it meets your needs.
I know from experience that most System Operators, like myself, do not
have funds available to immediately register new programs. This game
is fully functional until players reach level 6. Once on level 6 the
player is informed that they cannot proceed until a registration code
is obtained. The game does not stop for others when the first player
reaches this level. There are no special key files you need in order
to test this game. I feel this method will give you ample time to
decide whether it is worth your investment.
[-■- REGISTRATION METHODS -■-]
■ Checks/Money Orders
Registration can be accomplished in one of two methods. The first
method is to mail a check or money order to the address listed on my
"technical support" page of this document. (NO CASH PLEASE!) We
cannot be held responsible for cash lost in the mail. You can choose
to have your registration key mailed to you or left in a private
message on our BBS.
More information in the REGISTER.DOC file on pricing and methods.
■ Credit Card Orders
The second method is to call The Coral Reef BBS and register online
in our credit card door. This is definitely a faster way to obtain
your registration number. After using the credit card door to
register, you can call back normally within 24-48 hours to receive your
personal registration number. Additionally, if you call to register
the game through our credit card door and I am online at the same
time, you can page me and I will generate your registration number for
you in 1-2 minutes while you wait.
More information in the REGISTER.DOC file on pricing and methods.

INSTALLING THE WCX FILES
************************************
Mutants was originally intended to work with all versions of Wildcat!
from 4.0 to 4.12 but we have learned otherwise. Commands used in the
4.12 version of wcCODE are not recognized in older versions. We will
attempt to keep working copies of Mutants for older versions starting
with 4.12. This will help many of you that do not upgrade with every
new release of Wildcat! BBS.
TIP: You MUST make sure that PKUNZIP.EXE is located someplace in your
path statement so that the MUTEDIT.WCX utility program can find
it. Consult your DOS manual on the PATH statement for more help.
TIP: The installation program was tested using drive C as the main
drive for setup. Careful planning has been done so that this
game will work on any drive. PLEASE INFORM ME OTHERWISE!
1. Make a directory on any hard drive with any name you choose. I
will use C:\DOORS\MUTANTS as a default for this documentation.
2. UNZIP the archive into the directory you created.
3. Run MakeMenu and add MUTANTS.WCX to one of your menus. This is
the WCX that is the actual game your callers will play. Don't
forget to include the drive and path in the parameters field of
MakeMenu. Consult your Wildcat! Sysop manual for more information
on setting up wcCODE applications.
4. Add the MUTEDIT.WCX program to your Sysop menu. This program will
be used for configuring the game, editing player records, etc.
This program is designed for a Sysop and one Co-Sysop, door Sysop,
etc. I would set this program up on your Sysop menu where regular
callers don't have access to it just to be safe.
This configuration program CANNOT be run as a stand alone EXE file.
5. Run the MUTEDIT.WCX program you set up previously. This will
allow you to configure your game. (See below)
A. First, run the [I]NSTALL option to create all directories and
files necessary for Mutants to operate.
B. Second, use the [C]ONFIGURATION option to set the game up.
See Configuration section below.
6. Once you have completed the configuration you can enter the game
to make sure that all appears normal and no error messages are
displayed. The typical error messages that we have all come to
know and love may appear if something was setup in error. :)
If you have difficulty in setup then contact me.
[-■- CONFIGURATION -■-]
1. REGISTRATION NUMBER: If you have sent in your registration fee
then enter the code we have supplied to you. Otherwise leave it.
2. MAXIMUM STREET FIGHTS: The number of fights a person may battle
in the street per day. I suggest 10-15 so players cannot advance
in the game too fast. If you want the game to proceed faster then
up this amount.
3. MAXIMUM PLAYER FIGHTS: The number of fights a person may start
against another real player in the game per day. I suggest
setting this to 3 fights per day.
4. MAXIMUM AMOUNT TO TRANSFER: The number of credits a person may
transfer to a player. Transfers are only allowed among members
on a team. A suggested amount would be $1,000 - $3,000 but you
can adjust this as you see how your callers play the game.
5. LENGTH OF GAME: This is the number of days the current game has
been running. This is here just for the sake of curiosity. It
has no effect on the game and normally should not need changing.
6. PERSON WHO REGISTERED GAME: You can enter the name of the person
who contributed the registration fee for Mutants or enter your own.
7. CURRENT WEATHER CONDITIONS: These describe the weather conditions
for the current day. Different conditions affect Mutants in
several ways.
8. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TEAMS: A team can have up to 4 members on it.
You should keep the maximum number of teams low so that it forces
people to join other teams instead of everyone trying to create
their own. A person does NOT have to join a team but their are
definite advantages to it. A good starting point would be to
have 10 teams (a total of 40 players if 4 members join each team).
I feel this will promote a lot of competition in the game.
9. This is the number of rooms available to Zorak's Hotel. The
maximum is 25 and you should have no reason to change this as the
game automatically tracks available rooms. This is here in case
there is an error where you need to edit the number.
A. INACTIVE PLAYERS: Enter the number of days before deleting those
stagnating players who have not played in "x" amount of days.
B. CITY NAME: This is the name of the city. Change it if you like.
C. RULER'S NAME: This is the current ruler of the city. Change it
if you like.
D. SCORES SETUP
This option will allow you to setup a directory to contain the
scores that are generated in the game. You can also name each
score listing something different than the default. This option
allows you to place these scores in your \WILDCAT\BULL directory
and use any BULLx.BBS filename for each display on your BBS.
E. GAME SYSOP
Enter the name of a person you trust to use the Mutants Editor.
This person will then be able to edit player records and other
configuration settings. If you don't want to set up a Co-Sysop
name here then enter your own name.
F. CLEAN MODE
When clean mode is OFF, players will be allowed to seduce Tamara
and enter Victoria's Vixen Haven. These areas are not lewd but
they are a bit suggestive. If you have a lot of younger people
calling to play the game you may want to turn clean mode ON.
Now enter the game and everything should work!
[-■- MAINTENANCE -■-]
There are no separate maintenance programs. The first person to
enter the game for the day will invoke the maintenance routine for
all players.
The file DATETIME.DAT is sensitive to when maintenance runs. Do not
change the number in this file or add lines of text to it. If the
file is deleted the game will re-create it so no worry there. JUST
DON'T CHANGE THE VALUE STORED IN THE FILE!
Maintenance will create some files with the extension of *.BAK and the
original filename. These are backup files created before maintenance
does any processing with the actual game files. In the event that a
failure should occur during maintenance these files could be used.
This file is backed up daily so if an error would occur and you let the
file sit around for a few days then the error will be stored in the
backup copy as well.
[-■- SPECIAL NOTES -■-]
SCORE FILES
There are several score files found in the \MUTANTS\SCORES directory
that you can use to post as bulletins. These files are updated
every time a player views the scoreboard for that particular listing
within the game. You can delete them at any time and rest easy
knowing that the next player to view them will re-create them.
NEWS.BBS
In the C:\MUTANTS\DISP\ directory there is a file called NEWS.BBS
that is intended for you to use to post information, news, contests
or whatever else you think up. This file is also used by me for
updates in each release so I can inform players what is new. You
may want to backup your news file if you change it so that it is
not overwritten during upgrades.
GAMETRAK.TXT
This file is a straight ASCII text file that has a number recorded
in it. This number tells you how many times people have played
Mutants. You can delete this file at any time to reset it if you
care to see how often people enter daily, weekly, monthly, etc.
AD1.BBS - AD2.BBS - AD3.BBS - AD4.BBS - AD5.BBS
This three display screens are advertisements for you post on your
BBS so that callers will know Mutants is online. Please use them!
It's the only way I can advertise this game and gain support for it.
DATETIME.DAT
Do NOT change the value in this file.
That's all there is to it. I hope you and your callers enjoy the
game as I know I had a lot of fun developing it and look forward
to making many more additions and improvements to it.
Thank you for trying our first adventure game.
